Before you hire
What to know before hiring a roofer in Massachusetts
Permits. Re-roofing a home in Massachusetts generally requires a building permit from the local building department, and the contractor normally pulls it. If a contractor suggests skipping the permit, that's a red flag.
Licensing. For residential work, look for a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration and a Construction Supervisor License (CSL). You can look both up on the state's website.
Ice and water barrier. New England freeze-thaw cycles cause ice dams. A proper replacement includes ice and water barrier at the eaves and along valleys, not just felt paper.
Layers. Code generally caps a roof at two layers of shingles. Plenty of older houses around here already have two, which means a full tear-off.
Get it in writing. A good estimate spells out materials, tear-off, disposal, pricing for any decking replacement, the permit and cleanup.

Before we send a contractor any calls, we verify they hold the Massachusetts credentials the work requires, such as a Home Improvement Contractor registration and a Construction Supervisor License, and keep proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation on file.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Massachusetts?
A building permit is generally required to re-roof a home in Massachusetts, and the contractor typically pulls it from the local building department. Small repairs may not need one. Ask the contractor to confirm the permit is on file before work starts.
Can new shingles go over my old roof?
Building code generally allows no more than two layers of asphalt shingles, and a second layer can hide rot or damaged decking. Most contractors recommend a full tear-off so the deck can be inspected and ice and water barrier installed at the eaves.
