Pepperell roofs, village by village
What's on the roofs in Pepperell
Pepperell sits on the Nashua and Nissitissit Rivers along the New Hampshire line. For most of its history it was a small town with a village center and a paper mill. That changed fast: population went from about 3,460 in 1950 to more than 11,000 by 2000, with over 600 homes built in the 1950s and '60s, over 1,000 in the 1970s and another 1,000 in the 1980s. Today about three-quarters of homes are single-family houses, and most are owner-occupied. So the typical Pepperell roof sits on a house from those growth decades, with older homes in the villages.

Pepperell Center
The civic center grew along the main roads around a common laid out in 1740, with Federal-era houses, the Meeting House and Town Hall. It's listed on the National Register as a historic district.
East Pepperell
The mill village on both banks of the Nashua, built up around the paper mill, which stopped running in 2002. Mill cottages, boarding houses and row housing were part of its fabric.
Nissitissit and the Covered Bridge
Early settlement clustered at the Hollis Street crossing of the Nissitissit, where a covered bridge has stood since about 1725, most recently rebuilt in 2010.
North Pepperell
A former mill settlement along Prescott and North Streets. Its mill gradually went out of use, and manufacturing there ended in 1889.
Heald Pond
The area around Heald Pond has early high-style brick houses from the Georgian and Federal periods. Brick walls and chimneys need careful flashing where they meet the roof.

Pepperell houses
Roofing Pepperell's growth-era homes and village houses
Homes from the 1950s through the 1980s. More than 2,600 homes went up in Pepperell in those four decades. Many are now on their second or third roof. Signs it's time: curling or cracked shingles, granules in the gutters, and leaks around chimneys, skylights and vents.
Colonial houses and capes. Pepperell's colonial-era homes are mostly two-story, center-chimney houses and capes. The big central chimney is a common leak point, and old board decking often needs patching under new shingles.
Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian houses. Side-hall houses from the 1800s, plus Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes, add porches, bays and cross gables. Each place a porch or bay roof meets the house needs good flashing.
Mill-village housing and bungalows. East Pepperell's cottages and row housing, and the town's early-1900s bungalows, often have low porch roofs that need a membrane rather than shingles. See flat and rubber roofs.
Winters along the rivers and hills bring snow and ice; see ice dams. Weighing a repair against a replacement? See roof repair and roof replacement.
Permits
Roofing permits in Pepperell
Building permit. Pepperell's Building and Zoning Department lists re-roofing among the work that needs a permit, and takes applications online through the town's OpenGov portal. If you hire a licensed contractor, they should pull it. Work without a permit risks a stop-work order, double permit fees or a fine.
Homeowner permits. A homeowner may act as the general contractor but is then responsible for all the work. The town also notes that homeowner's insurance may not cover claims on work done without a permit or by an unlicensed contractor. You can check a contractor's license with the state's Division of Professional Licensure.
Historic review. We found no local historic district in Pepperell. Pepperell Center's National Register listing doesn't add a permit review.
Licensing. We verify the credentials a job requires before we send a contractor any calls.
Roofing Service Pros is a referral service. We don't pull permits or do roofing work. The roofing contractor who does the job handles the permit.
FAQ
Pepperell roofing questions
Does Pepperell require a permit to re-roof?
Yes. The town's Building and Zoning Department lists re-roofing among the jobs that need a building permit, and applications are filed online. Work done without a permit can lead to a stop-work order, double permit fees or a fine. If you hire a licensed contractor, they should pull the permit for you.
Can I act as my own contractor?
The town allows a homeowner to act as the general contractor, but then you're responsible for all the work. The town also warns that homeowner's insurance may not cover claims on work done without a permit or by an unlicensed contractor.
Is there a historic district review in Pepperell?
We found no local historic district. Pepperell Center is on the National Register, which recognizes its history but doesn't add a permit review. The town's open space plan notes that Town Meeting twice declined to adopt a historic district bylaw.
Our house was built in the 1970s or '80s. What should we expect from a replacement?
Homes from those decades are often on their second roof, and some have two layers. Expect a full tear-off, some decking replacement, ice and water barrier at the eaves, and a look at attic ventilation, which many houses from that era lack.
Do homeowners pay to use Roofing Service Pros?
No. The call and the referral are free. Your estimate, price and contract are between you and the roofing contractor.
