North Andover roofs, area by area
What's on the roofs in North Andover
North Andover grew from a farming parish around its Old Center into a mill town along the Lawrence line, with company housing built for its workers and large estates around Lake Cochichewick. After World War II, better highways turned it into a commuter suburb. Today I-495 crosses the town along with Routes 114, 125 and 133, and many homes sit in subdivisions built on former farmland. That history leaves a wide range of roofs, from First Period center-chimney houses to post-war colonials.

Old Center
The original meetinghouse village, which stayed largely rural and became a choice spot for wealthy families, including the Stevens family. The Parson Barnard House, a center-chimney house from about 1715, stands here. It's a local historic district.
Machine Shop Village
Between 1862 and 1868, Davis and Furber built a large housing program for its workers. The houses were sold to private owners in the early 1950s, and most survive with few changes.
Sutton's Mills and north Main Street
Mill buildings and housing grew up around Sutton's Mills at the north end of Main Street, near the Lawrence line, where the town's industrial history is most visible.
Stevens Pond
The Stevens Mill built a cluster of workers' houses along Harkaway Street in its more isolated enclave at Stevens Pond.
Lake Cochichewick and Osgood Hill
Mill wealth created large estates around the lake, including Shingle Style houses like Osgood Hill from 1886. Big roofs with many planes, dormers and chimneys.

North Andover houses
Roofing North Andover's colonials, worker housing and estates
First Period and Federal houses. North Andover's oldest homes are symmetrical gable houses, many with a center chimney, and Federal-era houses that are usually two and a half stories with chimneys inside the walls. Old board decking, uneven rafters and chimney flashing all need attention when these are re-roofed.
Mill workers' housing. In Machine Shop Village and along Harkaway Street, 1860s company houses are simple and sturdy but old. A tear-off often turns up boards that need replacing, so ask for a per-board price in the estimate.
Victorian and Shingle Style homes. Queen Anne, Stick and Shingle Style houses, including the lake estates, bring steep slopes, towers and deep valleys. Valleys and the walls where dormers meet the roof are the usual leak points.
Post-war subdivisions. Built on former farmsteads after the highways improved, these homes are now on their second or third roof. Check for two existing layers and for weak attic ventilation, a common cause of ice dams.

Permits and historic review
Roofing permits in North Andover
Building permit. North Andover's Building Department, at 120 Main Street, takes building permit applications online through the town's OpenGov portal. It points homeowners to the state's Construction Supervisor License and Home Improvement Contractor resources, so ask your roofer for both and let them pull the permit.
Old Center Historic District. North Andover has a local historic district under M.G.L. c. 40C. Its bylaw exempts paint color and roofing material, so a re-roof usually doesn't need a certificate. Solar collectors do need the Commission's review, and so can changes to other visible features. Check with the Old Center Historic District Commission if your project goes beyond the roof surface.
Licensing. We verify the credentials a job requires before we send a contractor any calls.
Roofing Service Pros is a referral service. We don't pull permits or do roofing work. The roofing contractor who does the job handles the permit.
FAQ
North Andover roofing questions
How do I get a roofing permit in North Andover?
North Andover's Building Department at 120 Main Street takes building permit applications online through the town's OpenGov portal. The department links the state's Construction Supervisor License and Home Improvement Contractor resources, so expect the contractor to show both. Let the roofer pull the permit.
My house is in the Old Center Historic District. Do I need approval for a new roof?
For the roofing itself, usually not. North Andover's historic district bylaw lists paint color and roofing material among its exemptions. But solar collectors do need the Commission's review, and changes to other visible features, like trim, dormers or chimneys, can too. Check with the Old Center Historic District Commission if the job goes beyond the roof surface.
I live in a Machine Shop Village house. Anything special about the roof?
Those houses were built for Davis and Furber workers in the 1860s, and many survive with few changes. Expect board sheathing rather than plywood and older chimneys. Have the roofer check the decking and flash the chimney properly during a replacement.
Do the bigger homes near Lake Cochichewick need a specialist?
Large houses with complex rooflines, steep pitches and multiple chimneys take more skill and more flashing work than a simple gable roof. Ask the roofer about their experience with similar houses and how they handle valleys and wall flashing.
Is Roofing Service Pros free to use?
Yes. Calling and being referred costs homeowners nothing. Pricing and the contract are between you and the roofing contractor.
