Nor'eastersSustained wind lifts shingles, heavy wet snow strains older roofs
Tropical storm remnantsWind-driven rain, downed trees, especially near the coast
Summer thunderstormsSudden gusts, falling limbs, occasional hail
HailBruised shingles and lost granules that shorten roof life
Ice stormsHeavy branches and torn-down gutters

The insurance claim

Storm damage claims, step by step

  1. Make it safe. Stay clear of downed wires and report them to your utility.
  2. Document it. Photograph damage outside from the ground and inside, before cleanup.
  3. Prevent more damage. Get a temporary tarp on the roof and keep the receipt.
  4. Report the claim to your insurer and note the claim number.
  5. Get a roofer's inspection and written estimate with photos.
  6. Meet the adjuster. Many roofers will attend so nothing is missed.
  7. Review the settlement against the estimate before work starts.

Storm chasers

How to avoid storm chasers

After big storms, out-of-area crews go door to door. Some are fine, but many are gone before problems show up. Red flags:

  • Uninvited door-knocking right after a storm
  • Out-of-state plates, no local address
  • Pressure to sign today or "before the adjuster comes"
  • Large cash deposits up front
  • Asking you to sign over your insurance payment before you've seen an estimate

Registration rules differ by state. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island require home improvement contractors to register with the state, so ask for the number and look it up. In any state, ask for proof of insurance and local references.

The repair

What storm repairs usually involve

Emergency tarping to stop water until the permanent repair.

Shingle replacement for wind-lifted or missing shingles, matched as closely as the roof's age allows.

Flashing, vents and drip edge knocked loose.

Deck and rafter repair where a limb punctured the roof.

Gutters and downspouts pulled off by wind, ice or branches.

If the damage is widespread or the roof was already old, ask whether a full replacement makes more sense. Water already inside? See roof repair and leaks.

FAQ

Storm damage questions

How do I know if my roof has storm damage?

From the ground, look for missing or lifted shingles, granules piled in gutters, dents in metal vents and gutters, and debris on the roof. Inside, check ceilings and the attic for stains or drips. A roofer's inspection confirms it.

Should I tarp before the adjuster comes?

Yes. Photograph the damage first, then cover it. Insurers generally expect you to prevent further damage, and tarping costs are usually part of the claim.

Will my insurance pay for a whole new roof?

Sometimes, when the damage is widespread. More often it pays to repair the damaged sections. It depends on your policy, the extent of the damage and the roof's age.

How long do I have to file a storm damage claim?

It depends on your policy, and some set deadlines. Report damage as soon as you can, since delays can complicate a claim.

Can hail damage a roof without causing leaks?

Yes. Hail can bruise shingles and knock off granules, which shortens the roof's life even when nothing leaks right away. Have it inspected after a significant hailstorm.
