The cause

How an ice dam forms on a Methuen roof

Heat leaking out of the living space warms the attic and the roof deck. Snow on the upper roof melts, the water runs down, and it freezes again when it reaches the cold overhang at the eaves. The ridge of ice grows with each thaw until water pools behind it and seeps under the shingles.

So ice dams are really an attic problem. The usual sources of escaping heat:

  • Unsealed openingsAttic hatches, light fixtures, chimney chases and wiring holes let warm air rise into the attic.
  • Not enough insulationOlder houses often have little in the attic floor or behind knee walls.
  • Blocked or missing ventsWithout soffit intake and ridge exhaust, the attic holds heat.
  • Fans dumping into the atticBath and kitchen exhaust should go outdoors.

Signs

Spotting an ice dam early

  • A thick band of ice along the roof edge with heavy icicles
  • Winter water stains on ceilings near outside walls
  • Frost on the roof boards inside the attic
  • Bare upper roof while the snow stays on neighbors' roofs
  • Damp window trim or peeling paint high on the walls
Icicles and ice buildup along the edge of a shingled roof

Removal

Removing ice without wrecking the roof

Roofers use low-pressure steam to cut channels through the ice so water can drain. It doesn't damage shingles the way hacking does.

  • Skip the hammer and chisel. They break shingles and gutters.
  • Don't climb an icy ladder or roof.
  • No pressure washers, torches or heat guns.

A roof rake used from the ground can pull fresh snow off the first few feet of the roof, which starves the dam. Watch for overhead wires.

Prevention

Keeping ice dams from coming back

Seal and insulate the attic. This is the fix that matters most. A Mass Save home energy assessment is a good starting point.

Ventilate the roof. Soffit vents paired with a ridge vent keep outside air moving under the deck.

Protect the eaves. Ice and water barrier under the shingles keeps backed-up water out. It's part of any proper roof replacement.

Heat cables keep channels open but don't solve the cause.

Methuen houses

Which Methuen homes get ice dams most

Older homes with finished upper floors. Rooms tucked under the roof, with sloped ceilings and short knee walls, leave little space for insulation and venting. Heat goes straight into the roof.

Victorians with complex roofs. Valleys and the low spots where roof planes meet collect snow and ice, and water backs up there first.

Porch roofs on multi-families. Shallow porch roofs hold snow, and the joint where they meet the house is a common winter leak.

FAQ

Methuen ice dam questions

Should I clean my gutters to stop ice dams?

Clean gutters help with drainage, but ice dams form on the roof above the gutter. The fix is keeping the roof deck cold with better air sealing, insulation and ventilation.

Is salt or ice melt on the roof a good idea?

Loose rock salt can damage shingles, gutters and plants below. Some homeowners use calcium chloride in a stocking laid across the ice to open a channel, but steam removal by a pro is safer for the roof.

Does insurance cover ice dam damage?

Many policies cover interior water damage from ice dams but not the cost of removing the ice. Every policy is different, so check yours and take photos.

Will a new roof stop ice dams?

A new roof with ice and water barrier at the eaves keeps water out when a dam forms, but it won't stop dams from forming. That takes attic air sealing, insulation and ventilation.

Can I get help paying for insulation?

Massachusetts residents can request a no-cost home energy assessment through Mass Save, which may include incentives for air sealing and insulation.
